Porto, Portugal

Granite, port lodges and a UNESCO riverfront

Porto stacks its granite houses down the Douro gorge to the Ribeira quay, spans the river with six bridges — two by Eiffel’s disciples — and stores three centuries of port wine in the lodges across the water. It is the country’s second economy and, since the 2010s, its most-launched-into European city.

What to see

Living in Porto

Porto’s rents run 25–35% under Lisbon’s with a comparable international scene, a real job market in tech and industry, and the airport 20 minutes from centre. The trade-off is rain — roughly double Lisbon’s annual precipitation.
