Golden Visa Funds 2026: How the €500k Fund Route Works

Last verified: October 2026 · informational only — not investment advice

Since 2023 the fund route is the Golden Visa’s main road: subscribe €500,000 into qualifying Portuguese venture capital funds, hold the position through the residency period, exit when eligible. It sounds simple; the differences between funds are where investors make or lose real money.

What makes a fund “qualifying”

The questions that actually matter

There is no official “approved list” — the regulator supervises; it does not endorse. Diligence therefore falls on the investor: who manages the fund and with what track record; the fee stack (management — typically 1–2% — plus entry/exit and performance terms); the portfolio strategy (early-stage tech vs growth vs mixed); and the exit mechanics in year 5–7. Ask for audited reports, not marketing decks.

Red flags worth taking seriously: guaranteed returns, funds that are real estate in disguise, unregistered intermediaries selling “visa packages”, and pressure to decide before diligence. The visa route is regulated; the sales process around it, much less so.

A practical note: the fund subscription and the immigration file run in parallel but must agree — subscription documents, bank trails and the AIMA application reference the same investment. Teams that handle both sides avoid the mismatches that stall files.
