Moving to Portugal: The Complete 2026 Roadmap
Thousands of people move to Portugal every year, and most hit the same five walls in the same order: wrong visa route, no NIF, no bank account, no lease without the first two, and appointments that book out months ahead. This roadmap puts the steps in the order that actually works in 2026.
Step 1 — Pick the right residence route before anything else
Your route determines everything downstream. The main 2026 options: the D7 for passive income (pensions, rentals, dividends — roughly €820+ monthly minimum, realistically €1,500+ approved), the D8 for remote workers (income ≥ 4× minimum wage, ≈ €3,600/month), work visas with an employer, study routes, and the Golden Visa for investors who don’t want to relocate day-to-day (fund investment from €500,000, physical presence of only 7–14 days a year). Choosing wrongly is expensive: switching routes later means restarting the clock.
Steps 2–4 — NIF, bank, money
The NIF (tax number) unlocks everything — leases, utilities, phone contracts — and is obtainable before arrival through a fiscal representative or at any Finanças office after it. Portuguese banks want the NIF plus proof of address and income; opening remotely is possible but slow. Move meaningful funds only after the account is live — and keep every transfer document for the residency file.
Steps 5–7 — Housing, SNS, the appointment
- Housing: expect landlords to ask for NIF + proof of income + deposit; temporary housing for the first month or two is normal and wise
- SNS healthcare: register at the local health centre with residence proof; get your utente number and family doctor assigned
- AIMA appointment: biometrics and document review — book early, keep the confirmation, expect the backlog to run months
The first 90 days decide how smooth everything else is: register where required, keep certified copies of every document, and build the paper trail before you need it. Portugal rewards organised paperwork more than urgency.
