Portugal has Europe’s most consistent surf: the Atlantic delivers rideable waves on the west coast most of the year, the Algarve handles summer, and the country hosts everything from first-lesson whitewater to the biggest waves ridden on the planet. This is the working map.

Where to surf what

Seasons and logistics

Autumn (September–November) is the pro season: warm water, swell, thin crowds. Summer belongs to beginners — smaller waves, warmest water (17–19°C Atlantic; 22–24°C Algarve). Schools rent full kits (€15–30/day); a lesson costs €30–50. Wetsuit rule: 3/4mm west coast spring–autumn, 4/5mm winter; Algarve summers run boardshorts-feasible.

Surf towns — Ericeira above all — became property markets in their own right.
