Sagres occupies the peninsula of mainland Europe’s southwest corner — Henry the Navigator’s fortress, a 75-metre cliff plunging on three sides, and a landscape of wind-shaped scrub where the land simply stops. The town exists for three things: the fortress, the surf at Tonel and Beliche, and the marlin and tuna fleet.

What to see

Living in Sagres

Small, seasonal, salty — Sagres suits surfers, sailors and escapees from busier coasts. Housing stock is limited and prices reflect the shortage rather than the size of the town.
