Algarve
Golden cliffs, 150+ beaches and 300 days of sun
The Algarve is Portugal’s southernmost region and its most recognisable one: a 155-kilometre coastline of golden limestone cliffs, hidden coves and long island beaches, backed by fig and almond orchards. It runs from Vila Real de Santo António on the Spanish border to the wilder, undeveloped shores of the Costa Vicentina in the west. Summer water temperatures reach a comfortable 22–24°C, and the region records around 3,000 hours of sunshine a year — one of the highest figures in Europe.
Beyond the resort towns the Algarve keeps a quieter, older identity. Tavira’s church roofs, Olhão’s cubist fisherman quarter, Silves’ red castle and the Ria Formosa lagoon park — a 60-kilometre system of barrier islands — reward travellers who move one street back from the seafront. Inland, the barrocal hills produce cork, carob and some of Portugal’s best oranges.
The Algarve is also the part of Portugal where international life is easiest: Faro airport connects to most of Europe, English is widely spoken, and there are established British, German, Dutch and Scandinavian communities. That convenience is exactly why it is the first choice for retirees and families relocating to Portugal — and why property and rental prices in the central Algarve sit well above the national average.
For living and investing, the practical picture is: strong short-let market in season, good private healthcare, international schools around Lagos, Almancil and Vilamoura, and a lifestyle that works year-round thanks to mild winters (daytime averages 15–18°C in January).
